I lacked the clumsiness of a child, his naivety. My first drawings could never have been shown at an exhibition of children’s drawings. So far as I am concerned, I did not have that genius. But he would have to start right from the beginning. It is possible for such a child to become a real painter one day, perhaps even a great painter. It gradually disappears as they get older. What people regard as premature genius is the genius of childhood. Picasso began formally studying art at the age of 11. In 1892, Pablo entered the School of Fine Arts there, but it was mostly his father who taught him painting. When Don José was offered a better-paid job, he accepted it immediately, and the Picassos moved to the provincial capital of La Coruna, where they lived for the next four years.
The family was far from rich, and when 2 other children were born - Dolorès ("Lola") in 1884 and Concepción ("Conchita") in 1887 - it was often difficult to make ends meet. He worked hard to show the world in a new way. While people with traditional tastes may prefer his childhood work, Picasso himself held his later avant-garde art in higher esteem. By the turn-of-the-century, however, he had entered his Blue Period, a phase that ushered in a modernist aesthetic and ended the oeuvre now known as his early work. He became interested in art from other continents too. Picasso worked in his realist style for the rest of the 1890s. Picasso became friends with lots of artists and writers, like Georges Braque who he invented cubism with and a writer called Gertrude Stein who collected art wrote a cubist book. When he moved to Paris as a young man, he struggled like many others. This is because Paris was the capital of the avant-garde, which means cutting-edge and very cool.
